. Speed Skating in Australia

Speed Skating is a relatively young sport in Australia, but it is very popular in South America, USA and Europe. The Columbians dominated the 2000 World Titles in Columbia and Chile held the World Titles in 1999. Australia won 4 gold medals at the 1999 World Titles (2 to Sophie Muir (from Sydney) and 2 to Shaun Thompson (Perth).

Distances covered range from the 300m Time Trial to a 42000m marathon.

By no means is this area of ROLLERBLADING.COM.AU as comprehensive as the aggressive inline section but here are some pictures of the Australian speed skating scene taken by James O'Connor at the 2001 NSW State Championships. Click here for a small video clip.

Australia has some of the best speed skaters in the world such as world champions Sophie Muir and Corey Price. Mandy Holdsworth is another young Australian speed skater to look out for. Australia also gave birth to a well known company called Bont Skates. Bont is an Australian family-owned manufacturing company based in Sydney which makes custom built and molded-fit speed skates and equipment for inline & ice speed skaters. The Bont family has made a huge impact on the sport of speed skating over the years and the Bont website is well worth a visit.

To become involved in speed skating in Australia get in touch with a local club, check out the Bont Skates website & also take a look at the SkateAustralia.org.au website.
