ARO 2015: Australian Rollerblading Open competition set for Canberra on November 28

Rhys Bell ARO Champion

It’s the one time of year we can all count on to see each other, catch up for a roll and witness a whole new level of rollerblading.

After a smashing 2014 edition at The Park in Geelong, this year, ARO is taking place in the national’s capital, Canberra.

Event categories include Open Street, Old School (30+), Under-18s, Under-14s and Girls.

The competition currently has approval to run at Woden Skate Park, but after some discussion with the locals the competition may move to Tuggeranong Skate Park so a vert category can be included.

UPDATE: ARO 2015 moves to Tuggeranong Skate Park

Either way, after Rhys Bell and Tristan Richards blitzed ARO 2014 in both the Open Street and Mini Mega categories respectively, the locals are going to be very tough to beat.

Rollerblading.com.au will make sure to keep you updated with any movements as they happen.

For now, start booking those flights and RSVP on Facebook.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkaDAT6PROw”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Veteran skater Paul Wicke (36) celebrates 10 years of rollerblading in Canberra

Paul Wicke Canberra

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/132626067″][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”true” align=”left” margin_bottom=”0″]Canberra veteran Paul Wicke has just dropped an amazing new edit featuring 10 years of skating in Australia’s capital city.

Unfortunately it’s not all reason to celebrate, with the edit prompted by a severe injury to 36-year-old’s knee a few months back, meaning he may never be able to skate again.

Here is what Paul had to say: “After severely injuring my knee a few months back and being uncertain if I could/would skate again, I decided to put together some clips from my time skating in Canberra since moving here 10 years ago. Hopefully ill be able to add to it again in the future as the mind is still willing. I just have to wait for the body to catch back up again.”

Featuring hammer after hammer from the days of baggy jeans right through to now, we definitely hope this isn’t the last the world of rollerblading has seen from Paul Wicke.

Good luck with your recovery Paul, we hope to see you on the roll again!

Australia features in Michael Pedersen’s new video of his global travels

Michael Pederson

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/123294012″][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”true” align=”left” margin_bottom=”0″]Denmark’s Michael Pedersen has dropped an awesome edit of his global travels, beginning right here in Australia four years ago.

From wild adventures to serious injuries, a lot happened to Michael in his time on the road.

Here is what he had to say about the trip:

“Four years ago, I went on a airplane to Australia, right after the Danish rollerblading competition (PonyCup) and thats where my travels around the world started. After a couple of months in Australia I went back to Europe, stayed there for a while, before going to The United states of America.

“Later that year I had a terrible accident, falling head first 6m down, but i survived and two weeks later I was standing in South America, which was one of my best travel experience ever and the year after I went to South Africa. In between my travels I always went back to the lovely city of Copenhagen, but now I’m living in the South of Europe.

“So now, four years later, I’m back in Denmark, for the last PonyCup competition and ready with my video with rollerblading moves from all the continents around the world except Asia, but hopefully I’m going there later this year.

“I would like to say thanks to everybody who have inspired and helped me on the road. Either picking my up in cars and drive around and for letting me crash on your couches and for teaching me about life and for all the fun times. I couldn’t have done this without my amazing friends. I really appreciate it!”

Filmed in 5 continents: Europe, Australia, South Africa, South America and The United States of America.

Cities: Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Lima, Quito, Johannesburg, New York, Long Beach, Copenhagen, Roskilde, Skagen, Esbjerg, Aalborg, Aarhus, Nykøbing Falster, Eskilstuna, London, Berlin, Glasgow, Amsterdam and Lisbon.

Watch Tristan Richards’ epic double misty flip on the mini mega at ARO 2014

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][mk_image src=”http://www.australianblading.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_0627.jpg” image_width=”800″ image_height=”450″ crop=”true” lightbox=”false” frame_style=”simple” target=”_self” caption_location=”inside-image” align=”left” margin_bottom=”25″][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”true” align=”left” margin_bottom=”0″]Of all the hammers at this year’s Australian Rollerblading Open at The Park in Geelong, it was hard to go past Tristan Richards’ epic double misty flip for the most spectacular trick of the day.

The Canberra native had been training hard in the lead up to the event and it showed when it counted, with the lofty double misty sealing his win in the first ever Australian Mini-Megaramp competition, following a huge double backflip earlier in the runs.

Iain Smith caught the mini-megaramp competition in all its glory, including the winning trick in all its suicidal glory. Big ups to Tristan for putting his body on the line for the sake of ARO glory, you definitely deserved the win. Nitro Circus anyone?
